Thought for a New Day

"Yesterday's gone, tomorrow is not promised to any of us. Use Your time wisely," said the preacher on the C train last night.

Thought of the Day

"A lot of things will change and keep changing, but a lot of things are going to just stay the same and keep on chugging along....I guess that is life now, we just have to enjoy all the time we have, with all the people we have to share it with."

(How did i get so lucky as to be married to the person who provides such comforting words?)

Dear Philip, You're in the arms of an Angel; may you find some comfort there...

Stolen Sighting

I've stolen someone else's sighting (from Gawker.com) because, despite all the hubbub surrounding the movie being filmed next door, I haven't seen anyone famous in my 'hood this week. But at least someone did:

"Bruce Willis last night at Gaetana’s on Christopher & Greenwich. He’s filming a movie around the corner. Bruce gave a pretty enthusiastic high-five to the bartender Frankie. Guess he’s just one of the guys."

2.07.2006

To keep up with my running list of celeb sightings, I thought I'd post this pic of me, Nandita, and supermodel/tsunami survivor Petra Nemcova (taken over the weekend). She counts, right?

Maybe it's not the moon at all...

...I hear James Foley's shooting down the street...*

My walk home from the gym was a little more exciting than usual tonight. Mostly I spend this mile-long trek discussing dinner with Mark, chatting on my phone, or just keeping my chin tucked into my neck to avoid the icy wind off the Hudson. But tonight I walked right onto a big bucks Hollywood movie set. I know I should be over the excitement of seeing a movie set since it is New York after all, but I had done a little research and found out that this was the set for "Perfect Stranger," a James Foley movie starring Halle Berry, Bruce Willis, and Giovanni Ribisi. And, they happen to be filming down the street as I write this...if i open the window and crane my nexct some, I can actually see all the action live. Unfortunately, no sightings tonight. Just some extras and a guy dressed in black (it's a thriller..I assume many of the characters will be wearing black) running up the stairs in front of a brownstone.

So yeah, that's my big thrill for the night. I'm nursing a very sore tailbone (long story) and a few other ailments, so my track workout was pretty subpar. My training partner (and life partner...hah hah) is away at a client for the week, so I'm having a hard time mustering up motivation without him. I may even take the day off tomorrow and try to regroup on Thursday with a swim workout. Good thing there are still about 5 mos to go before the big race! Yikes.

I need to finish up some research for my next freelance piece (Want to know what your favorite snack says about you? I can tell you!) and give my life partner a call. (Sorry for using that rediculous label twice, but Bec had me laughing about the hippy "life partner" couples in New Paltz...so it's stuck in my head).

*(for those of you who don't have the Rent playlist on repeat on your iPod, that's a line borrowed--and slightly altered from the musical).

February is FUN

February is bringing to fun! My all-time favorite month is not letting me down so far--and we're only five days in. Friday night marked Keren's 27th birthday, which we celebrated with a delicious dinner at Otto, then slurped down some cotton candy cosmos at Absolutely 4th (yes...that would be real, carnival-style spun sugar). On Saturday, we had a yummy brunch at our neighborhood greasy spoon spot, Sweet Life, then proceeded to the gym for a swim workout. (Note to self: do not attempt a 3,000 yard workout with about 3 pounds of breakfast in your stomach). Then we got in the car and drove out to Point Pleasant, NJ for Shannon's and Jeff's engagement party. Dinner lasted about three hours...bruschetta, calamari, salmon with artichoke, chicken parm, shrimp parm, penne with vodka sauce, cheesecake, and more...

Afterwards, he hit the Mariani's house for an hour or so, before returning back to the city.
Today, I'm still glued to the couch (thanks to a Project Runway marathon) but hope to step outside in a few for some sort of excercise and fresh air.

Pictures of last night's party are below.

Celebrity Sighting Roundup

I realized I forgot to report a few recent celebrity sightings. These happen to be repeat sightings, but I'll report 'em anyway:

Saturday 1/28: Q-Tip (of Tribe called Quest) checking into the gym. Black puffy coat with a mini-fro. Apparently, he later hit the boxing ring.

Sunday, 1/29: Walked by Ed Norton and a friend as they escaped the rain by ducking into the Spotted Pig. He was wearing a blue windbreaker (with a hood) and an FDNY hat. His friend was unrecognizeable.

Tuesday, 1/31: Molly Shannon, wearing black high-heeled boots over jeans, a black cropped pea-coat and a white hat, sprinting down 15th street between 8th and 9th Aves. I guessed she was rushing to get on the subway. This is the first time I've seen her within the past year or so without any of her kids in tow. (So maybe she was in a rush to pick them up?)

A Night With Joni

Last night's pre-birthday celebration was not spent at Bec's place with a few friends. Rather (much to my delight and surprise) it was spent with a few thousand friends at Carnegie Hall! Bec masterminded a plan that involved me meeting her at the Columbus Cirlce Whole Foods. She asked me to "help carry some groceries home," and, being the extremely gullible person I am, I bought right into it. I met her there where she was waiting with no groceries but a small bag. My curiosity knowing no boundaries or patience, I continued to plug her with questions about what we were doing there, but she wouldn't relent. We waited in the food court area for "Karl to meet us so we could all go home together." Wait, wasn't Karl supposed to be in a pilates class?

Then Mark showed up. Wasn't he supposed to be at work?

Then Karl. Then Annick. Then Bec opened her bag and revealed a cheesecake and blackberries. Dessert before dinner? That's very unlike Bec (and so is cheesecake!) The clock was inching towards 8, so I guessed out loud that we were going to a show. "A show?" Bec replied, aghast, as though I asked her if she had eaten a McDonalds' hamburger for lunch. But Annick and Karl went to get coffee, and Mark went to get dinner...and I finally got Bec to give up with act. We were indeed going to a show: The Music of Joni Mitchell at Carnegie Hall, to be exact.

With Joni being one of my favorite all-time singers, there couldn't have been a better show to take me to! The five of us (John joined us at the theatre) sat among many aging hippies (who no doubt spent a few choice days at Yasgur's Farm) as we listened to Marc Cohn, Judy Collins, Shawn Colvin, Cowboy Junkies, eels Amy Grant, Richie Havens, Jesse Malin, Me'shell Ndeg'Ocello, Tom Rush, Neil Sedaka, Suzanne Vega, Dar Williams, and Michelle Williams (of Destiny's Child, not Brokeback Mountain), and more. Best of the night, in my opinion: Jesse Malin singing Carey, Michelle Williams lending youthful exuberance to Help Me, and a bewigged, but beautiful Judy Collins with Both Sides Now (not Chelsea Morning...which was previously butchered by Nellie McKay).

Despite the lack of an appearance by Ms. Mitchell and a few sleepy moments, the show was excellent and a fantastic way to kickoff my birthday month! Thanks again to Bec for organizing!

Getting Back in the Swing of Things

I’ve been keeping pretty quiet my training lately, only because I really wasn’t sure if working out at the gym technically qualifies as “training.” In order to be in training, you have to actually be training for something right? This kind of goes along with my other philosophy about writing: Don’t call yourself a writer if you aren’t published regularly (hence the reason why I often shy away from tossing around the label as my occupation).

But I digress. Many of you have probably caught on to my obsession with the gym—my home away from 165 Christopher Street. What am I doing there for hours on end, you ask? Well, lots of swimming, biking and running, all in preparation for the New York City Triathlon. Yep, I’m following in my sisters’ ginormous footsteps (metaphorically speaking, of course. I’m the one with the huge feet!) as I dive into the Hudson River at some ungodly hour on July 17. And I will not be alone. Mark is doing it too (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), along with Laurel, Bec, and John. I think this calls for a major celebration come July!

More about the tri later—as you’ll be hearing much on the topic within the next five months. But I’m proud to share with you that I had a great track workout with Bec last night. 4x800 at tempo speed, with about 90 seconds rest in between. Coach Karl called out the times: 3:10, 3:14, 3:12, 3:08. Okay, so I’m not headed to the Olympics any time soon, but at least I stayed consistent. I topped the workout with about 20 minutes on the bike and then ran a steady 48 minutes this morning. I feel great (knock on wood...)!

Tonight I’ll be off—celebrating the birthday a little early at Bec’s. I’m not ready to turn 27, but I don't mind having an excuse to party!

Not too Shabby...

I was just under 80% accurate on my Oscar nomination predictions. I really struggled on best supporting actress...honestly, I just wasn't that impressed by Catherine Keener in Capote and like most of the world, I hardly heard anything about Junebug so Amy Adams didn't even cross my radar screen. (Although since she did some guest spots on the Office, I think that means I automatically have to like her!) Here are the actual nominations. My wrong picks are in red.

Ode to the Oscars

I'll be at work a little late tomorrow. Not because I plan to sleep in or fret about my lackluster wardrobe or disagreeable hair. No, tomorrow morning I'll be up early, bright-eyed, and bushy-tailed at 8:30 for the annoucement of the nominations for the 78th Academy Awards.

So what if it's not a "strong year" for cinema. So what if I'm kind of getting tired of Jake, Joaquin, Heath, and George (is that even possible?). I'll still forever be a sucker for the Oscars. Something about the buildup, the pre-ceremony buzz, the who's-wearing-what rumors. And then there's the the Oscar coup de gras: the red carpet. And with Isaac Mizraahi at the helm of the E! pre-show, we can expect to find out even more about Eva Longoria's, ahem, "hairstyles."

So alas,
here are my predictions for the Oscar nomininations in the major cateogries. Coming from a girl who has yet to see Brokeback Mountain(hey, I'm not the only one! Right, Dubya?) , I may not be the most reliable source. But I've read enough reviews, celebrity profiles, and gossip to feel like I have at least an idea of who might be nominated. I may be completely wrong (and yeah, the nominees are pretty obvious at this point), but here goes:

Weekend Recap

What do you do with 48 commitment-free hours? A whole lotta everything. And that’s just what we did over this past weekend. Mark and I kicked off the weekend with a post-work swim workout on Friday (who needs happy hour when you’ve got a pool?), then we parted ways for our dueling girls’/boys’ night out/in. I jetted off to the lower east side to meet Keren, Nandita, and Meghan (all former NG employees) at Stanton Social, while Mark stayed in the comfort of our apartment, and thanks to the marvels of modern day technology, was able hang with his boys who are spread around the country. (At the risk of making them sound like huge dorks, I won’t mention exactly what they were doing!)

Despite our respective late evenings, we managed to get up on an absolutely gorgeous Saturday morning to go for a 5 mile run down to Battery Park and back. New Yorkers hit the outdoors en masse, all taking full advantage of the 60-degree weather and sunshine. We made it back just in time to meet up with Patty at the gym. She and I struggled through a hip-hop class (brought back memories of me trying out for cheerleading in 8th grade—I need to face the fact that I’ll never be able to successfully execute a choreographed dance), ran a few laps, and sweated it out in the sauna. Then we went over to Dublin on Hudson where we were joined by Karl. We broke into Patty’s brand new Scrabble set and proceeded to battle it out for the next few hours. Guess who won?

The clouds and rain rolled in on Sunday, making for the perfect lazy day. But I had promised myself that I’d try out the 1 1/2-hour spin class at the gym, so I ambled over to the gym and met Karl for it. At the time, the class didn’t feel so hard. Today, however, I’m feeling a bit of the burn.

After walking home in the rain and running into Ed Norton outside the Spotted Pig, we had a nice lunch at Le Gamin. Mark and I then retreated into our apartment, where the draw of a track meet, tivo’d Oprah, and the SAG awards were enough to keep me in front of the telly for the rest of the evening.

Sightings

Just another day in New York, the city where a-listers, b-listers, and z-listers share sidewalks, cafes, and even gas stations.

My sightings for the day:

10:45 a.m.: Seth Meyers, better known as the John Kerry impersonator on Saturday Night Live, crossing Hudson Street. Dressed in sweats, coffee in hand, and practicing his lines for tonight's show. (Not really--but it would have been fantastic if he was!)

3:45 p.m.: The Mobil Station in Chelsea was the site for a Spike Lee Joint when Mr. Lee himself was fueling up his black BMW station wagon. (Who would have guessed Spike Lee drove a station wagon!?) Two cute kids and a dog (a yorkie, of course) in tow.

3:55 p.m.: Funny man Mario Cantone nearly walked into me as I side-stepped what appeared to be a low-budget photo shoot (maybe for a shoes?) on Washington Street. Couldn't tell if he was taking part in the shoot or just gawking at the mannequin trapped underneath a truck (part of the shoot) like the rest of us.

Happy Birthday, Sissy!

Today is Sissy's birthday. I can't remember the last January 20 that I didn't watch her blow the candles out, but fortunately we were able to celebrate last week in San Francisco. Last I heard, she was going to gift herself with a trip to San Diego or with a visit from Corinne. Whatever she does, I hope she has a wonderful day!

No doubt Grandpop will be smiling down on Sissy today!

Weekend Plans

"We’ve got a pretty nice little Saturday planned. We're going to go to Home Depot, buying some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time."

Hah hah hah. I hardly ever quote movies (I usually screw up the delivery), but if someone were to ask me what I was doing this weekend, I'd have to pull out the ol' Frank The Tank line from Old School. Like Frank, I do intend to go to Bed, Bath, & Beyond this weekend. But there will be no trips to Home Depot (not even sure where one is around here). And while Mark and his dad are hanging out with the guys from Orange County Choppers and drooling over Ducati’s, I will be doing any of the following things: getting my hair cut, working out, cleaning the apartment, writing freelance stuff, obsessing over online Scrabble and/or Soduko, shopping, or seeing some friends. A nice little Saturday indeed.

San Francisco in a nutshell

We had a great time in San Francisco! Such a beautiful city—made even more alluring by absolutely perfect weather on Sunday. It rained on Saturday, but that was okay because we spent most of the day tucked in a dark corner of a pub near Haight Street for the Redskins game. Later on, we celebrated Sissy’s birthday at dinner in North Beach with Mark, Chuck, Leah, Joe, Erik, and myself. That was followed by a quick stop at a Karaoke bar in the Castro—highlighted by a 200-pound-plus man doing the robot to--what else-- “Mr. Roboto”—and then we tore up the dance floor at a restaurant/club that had what I can only imagine might resemble the clientele of The Yacht Club in Bethesda. (Read: lots of middle-aged mamas getting their groove on. But it was still fun!)

We spent Sunday hitting all the touristy spots like Union Square, Lombard Street, and Fisherman’s Wharf. We rode a trolley car, saw the sea lions on Pier 39, and gawked at all of the stunning views. Then we headed over the Bay Bridge to Oakland Hills, where Shannon and Brian have an amazing house. Just about about two miles up the street from them is the entrance to a state park offering 90 miles of running and hiking trails—and a panoramic view of basically the entire city. The sun was just setting when we got to there, so we were in complete awe. Then Sissy and Erik left to go back to Lemoore, and the rest of us walked down to the adorable village near Brian and Shannon's for Thai food.

Before we left on Monday, Chuck took us to one of the many beaches near his place. (Sigh.) As we boarded the plane to go back to cold New York, we began to think it might be time to move out to the west coast.

If you're going to San Francisco...

I'll be sure to wear plenty of flowers in my hair this weekend! We leave tonight for San Francisco, where we'll stay with Chuck and see Sissy, Erik, Brian, Shannon, and more. I can't wait! It'll be my first time in SF since I was seven, and Mark's debut trip to California. Just a quick trip, but it should be a great time.

Thanks to Bec for a lovely girl's night (plus Mark) last evening. Visits from Bubba, Anna, Muthe, and Leezie (in town for a doctor's appointment). We had the best time rehashing old stories, memories of Mastenbrook place, and discussing Leezie's bump watch (yes, she has a small one now...). Speed Junior, I'm sure, was well entertained by our lively conversation (and well-fed from the delicious chicken/broccoli/mushroom feast prepared by Bubba and Magnolia cupcakes for dessert!). See Bec's blog for pictures.

I'll post pictures of San Fran when we get back on Monday!

A dinner in, a pulled muscle, and a celebrity sighting

If I were to sum up the past few days, the title of this entry would pretty much do it. Two highlights and one lowlight comprised the standout events in my life since the weekend. First, the lowlight: the pulled (or tweaked, or whatever you want to call it) quadriceps. Perhaps too prematurely (i.e., I am not in good enough shape), I ran a few track workouts at CP. Everything felt great, until I extended too far, tried too hard, or my tired ol' muscles just couldn't take any more. And now I'm stuck with a very sore quad that doesn't want to do any kind of exercise, no matter how much I want it to. I'm taking it easy for a few days, as I know from many former running-related injuries that rest (and ibuprofen) eventually heals all.

Now, to the highlights--as meager as they are. The dinner in is a reference to a nice night at home with Mark and Patty--who came over from Hoboken. We had brown sugar baked salmon (one of my three specialties!) and brownie sundaes. It was really nice to just stay in with a friend, watch tivo'd Dancing with the Stars, and catch up. (As a bonus, I was also able to catch up with another good friend, Nandita, on Sunday with a brunch at Cafeteria and then a quick stop at L where I bought my dress for Sissy's wedding reception next month!).

Finally, the celebrity sighting: Usually, I don't make a big deal about my sightings because, well, usually they aren't real a big deal. But this one was, not only because of my close proximity to the celeb but also because of her mega-watt star power. Here's the story: I was in the locker room at CP, getting ready to go swimming when I stopped at the toilets. Unintentionally, I followed an Amazonian blonde woman, who was leaving the stall, into the same toilet. (Yes, unintentionally, the door was open and I went in). Anyhow, I then went to wash my hands, where the Amazonian blonde was fixing her absolutely perfect corkscrew curls. I looked up into the mirror, over to this perfect person, when I realized it was none other than NICOLE KIDMAN! My heart skipped a beat and immediately, I felt like a troll next to her. Her skin was like pink porcelain (she was flushed, I guess, from her workout) and she was seriously like 6'10". Overall, she was absolutely beautiful...just like in the movies!

So that's my week so far. Oh: one more highlight--Mark and I just realized that the hotel featured in Blue Crush is the I'Hilani on Honolulu, where we stayed on our honeymoon. Yeah, it only took us two months to figure that out, but we're still excited about that.

See below for a (blurry) pic of Patty and I on Sunday.

A New Year

Last night, revelry abounded in Gowanus, Brooklyn, where Mark, Maureen, Erin, Mike, and myself partook in celebrations hosted by my former co-worker, Carl. We made the trek into our neighboring borough in two taxis, driven by cabbies were none to pleased to be taking us outside of Manhattan. ("Why you wanna go there?") But we had very good reason to do so, as Carl delivered on his promise of a keg of Brooklyn Lager--fueling an excellent dance party.

Our guests departed earlier this afternoon, and I headed over to the East Village to meet Corinne and some other friends (Danny, Ange, Jo, Keith, Adam Heiden) who had all been staying with Dan and Ange in Queens. Corinne and I made loose plans to see Match Point, but our idea proved to be a rather popular one and the theater was packed. So instead, we all went to an Irish pub to catch up and watch the Redskins game on a jumbo flat-screen. Or shall I say they watched...I really couldn't get into it, but I'm happy that they won nevertheless.

Some pictures of the day and last night are posted.

Happy 2006!

A Very Special Day--Far, Far, Away

Today at 2:30 p.m., EST, my very dear cousin Crissy is marrying Erik Kenny on the island of St. Lucia. Undoubtedly, they'll have a beautiful ceremony and I wish I could be there to see her walk down the sandy aisle in her gorgeous dress. Pictures will have to suffice until February 18, when we party-it-up in DC for their big reception! Just checked the weather in St. Lucia, and it looks pretty good, aside from some wind and chance of a shower. I hope everything goes well for them and that they're having a great time in paradise...

In other news from a colder part of the planet, we had a really fun time last night with the Flynns. We didn't end up in Chumleys (waaay too packed), but discovered a great little place around the corner (that happens to be owned by the Chumleys people) called Blue Mill Tavern. Entering the restaurant was like being tossed into the past--there was an art-deco feel with a huge wooden bar, and the dining room was encased in mirrors, and life-size murals depicting scenes out of the 1940s. The food was great, and as a bonus, Bill Pullman was sitting right next to us! So he's not Lindsay Lohan, ScarJo, or Brad Pitt, but it was a celeb siting through and through. Too bad I couldn't remember his name when I saw him--kinda defeats the excitement of a run-in when you have to announce, "hey look, it's that guy!".

Afterwards, Bec and John had us over for the most delicious apple and cranberry and walnut crisp (a la mode). A perfect way to cap the night!

Today is the last day here for our designer, Carl, so we're having a sushi lunch in his honor. This means I'm going to have to cancel my eyebrow appointment at Sephora, but I'd take free lunch over unkempt eyebrows any day!

A Rainy Day in New York

I hear New York is beautiful when it snows. Little would I know, as so far this winter has brought only a few inches of the white stuff. (And besides, it snowed overnight and had all but melted by the time I woke up, so that doesn't really count...). One might think that any precipitation that falls here in late December would be at least freezing rain, but today it's raining. A lot. And I forgot my umbrella, so when I exited the subway at 86th and Lexington, I received my second shower of the day. Good thing my office is only a few blocks away...

Rotten weather aside, today should be a good day. I am pretty busy at work and tonight we're meeting up with the Flynns again (last night, we had a lovely prix fixe dinner at
Artepasta and then walked over to Washington Square Park and back). We're going to Chumley's, a onetime speakeasy in the Village with a working fireplace and lots of history. Afterwards, we're going over to Bec's for dessert, which I'm sure will be a delicious treat--both the dessert and the hospitality. Mark and I wanted to make sure that his family saw our apartment first so that they didn't have such lofty expectations of NYC spaces after visiting Bec and John's place!

I'll try to take--and post--some pictures of the night.

Savor that bliss...

I just got an email from theknot.com indicating that we've been married for 60 days. While I usually don't keep track of these kinds of facts or figures, I was still happy with the pleasant little greeting, and noted the knot's advice on "savoring the newlywed bliss." Actually, their advice wasn't really groundbreaking (communicate, compromise, blah, blah, blah), but it made me think about different ways in which Mark and I can continue to be happy long after our "special day" (hah hah).

To begin with, we (okay, I, but Mark will hopefully join the club) have committed to getting out there and exploring the city more. We've finally settled into a nice routine--work, hitting our
new gym, dinner around 10, sleep by 12--neither of us want our lives to be, well, routine. So hopefully the many flavors this city has to offer will spice things up! And instead of wistfully thinking "...wouldn't that be cool...", I'm finally seriously considering checking out the various gallery, live music, and exhibit listings in Time Out New York and New York magazines. Certainly took long enough, I know, but hey--we've been a bit preoccupied!

The bliss factor can also be boosted by visitors. This week, Mark's parents and sisters are in town, so we're planning to hit a few spots with them (sadly, this all has to occur in the post-work hours since Mark and I are on the clock this week). I've been having fun coming up with a list of "must-see", but under-the-radar sites in NYC. (Note: if you're reading this and haven't visited us yet, whatcha waiting for? The eggplant couch is ready and waiting for you!)

Of course, the holidays are always blissful, so the concern to savor our wedding day happiness is pretty non-existent right now. And who knows, maybe all of the warm and fuzzy feelings will stick around for good. But it's good to be prepared, right?

Home Improvements

Now that we (finally) have a bit of downtime, Mark and I have been working a bit on improving our apartment. In baby steps. We've hung some things on the wall, hammered some nails, drilled some screws, and now our home is becoming more of a well, home.

Below are some pictures of the apartment, including our very first Christmas tree, purchased in the lovely metropolis of Jersey City!
